Septic tank size calculator
Short answer
For a 3-bedroom home, the four state rules compared here set a minimum of 1,000 gallons. Sizes mainly depend on bedrooms, and rules differ by state. A garbage disposal can raise the minimum. Use this to compare published rules, then confirm your size with your local health department.
How this calculator works
It applies the bedroom tables in four state rules. We chose these because their tables are public and easy to check. They're examples, not a national standard.
| Bedrooms | Indiana | Minnesota | Idaho | Rhode Island |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 750 gal | 1,000 gal | 900 gal | 1,000 gal |
| 3 | 1,000 gal | 1,000 gal | 1,000 gal | 1,000 gal |
| 4 | 1,250 gal | 1,500 gal | 1,000 gal | 1,250 gal |
| 5 | 1,500 gal | 1,500 gal | 1,250 gal | 1,500 gal |
| 6 | 1,800 gal | 2,000 gal | 1,500 gal | 1,750 gal |
With a garbage disposal, Minnesota requires at least 50% more capacity, plus multiple compartments or tanks. Rhode Island adds 250 gallons. We didn't confirm a disposal rule for Indiana or Idaho.
Questions people ask
What size septic tank do I need for a 3-bedroom house?
All four rules compared here set a 1,000-gallon minimum for 3 bedrooms. Your state or county may require more.
Why do rules use bedrooms instead of people?
Bedrooms show how many people a home could hold over its lifetime, whoever lives there today.
Is a bigger tank always better?
A bigger tank can mean more time between pumpings, but it doesn't replace pumping and it doesn't make a small leach field bigger.
Rules vary by location
Use your own state and county rules for any real project. The state contacts finder shows who to ask.
