Septic tank pumping calculator
Short answer
Choose your tank size and household size to get an estimate of the years between pumpings. A 1,000-gallon tank serving four people works out at about 2.6 years. It's an estimate from a published Extension table, so it can't replace a professional's measurement of the sludge and scum in your tank.
How this calculator works
It looks up your tank and household size in a table published by Oregon State University Extension, which matches the table used by Kansas State University. Kansas State gives the assumptions behind it:
- Tank kept with at least 24 hours of wastewater detention
- 50 gallons of wastewater per person per day
- 50% of retained solids digested
- Year-round home with no garbage disposal
If you use a garbage disposal, Kansas State says to shorten the time by about one-third, so the calculator multiplies the result by two-thirds.

Estimated years between pumpings for a year-round home, by the number of people living there. The calculator uses the same source for homes of up to 10 people.
| Gallons | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 5.8 | 2.6 | 1.5 | 1.0 | 0.7 | 0.4 |
| 750 | 9.1 | 4.2 | 2.6 | 1.8 | 1.3 | 1.0 |
| 1,000 | 12.4 | 5.9 | 3.7 | 2.6 | 2.0 | 1.5 |
| 1,250 | 15.6 | 7.5 | 4.8 | 3.4 | 2.6 | 2.0 |
| 1,500 | 18.9 | 9.1 | 5.9 | 4.2 | 3.3 | 2.6 |
| 1,750 | 22.1 | 10.7 | 6.9 | 5.0 | 3.9 | 3.1 |
| 2,000 | 25.4 | 12.4 | 8.0 | 5.9 | 4.5 | 3.7 |
| 2,250 | 28.6 | 14.0 | 9.1 | 6.7 | 5.2 | 4.2 |
How accurate is the result?
It's a planning estimate. The table was calculated from assumptions, so your real tank may fill faster or slower. It also gives a shorter time than the EPA's usual three to five years for many larger households, and a much longer time for small ones.
Whatever the result, the EPA says the average household system should be inspected at least every three years. A professional's measurement of your tank overrides any estimate. See how often to pump a septic tank for how that measurement works.
What this calculator doesn't cover
It doesn't apply to aerobic or other alternative systems, which need their own service schedule. It also doesn't cover homes with heavy water use, or part-time homes.
Rules vary by location
Your state or county may set its own pumping or inspection rules, and these come before any estimate here.
