How often should you pump a septic tank?
Short answer
The EPA says household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, and that a typical system should be inspected at least every three years. Alternative systems with mechanical parts generally need checks once a year. Your own schedule depends on tank size, household use and how fast the layers build up.
No single interval suits every home. Three to five years is the usual range, and an inspection tells you where your own tank falls within it.
The measurement that decides it
A septic service professional can measure the scum and sludge layers in your tank. The EPA says it's time to pump if either of these is true:
- The bottom of the scum layer is within 6 inches of the bottom of the outlet.
- The top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet.
What changes the schedule
According to the EPA, four things matter most:
- Household size
- Total wastewater generated
- Volume of solids in the wastewater
- Septic tank size
Put a big household on a small tank and it will usually hit the limit well before a couple on a large one.
Get an estimate for your household
Our pumping calculator gives a rough interval from your tank size and household size, based on a published Extension table. Treat it as a planning estimate. A professional's measurement still decides.
Keep a record
Ask your septic professional to write down the sludge and scum levels at each visit, and keep those notes with the date of every pump-out. After a few visits you'll see how fast your tank actually fills, which tells you more than any general rule.
Stay safe
Never go into a septic tank or lean over an open one. Gases in a tank can kill within minutes, and methane can explode. Leave opening and measuring to a trained professional.
Rules vary by location
Your state or county may set its own rules for pumping, inspection or records, especially when a home is sold. Check with your local health department.
