How to maintain a leach field

Short answer

Maintain a leach field by keeping the tank pumped, limiting water use and fixing leaks. Keep vehicles, trees and roof runoff away, and keep grass over the field. Mow it, but don't fertilize or water it. Have the system inspected at least every three years, and check the field for wet spots.

Day to day, a leach field asks very little of you. What it needs is protection: from solids, from excess water and from weight.

What does leach field care involve?

Keep solids out

  • Pump the tank on schedule. Our pumping calculator gives a rough interval.
  • Have the system inspected at least every three years, as the EPA advises.
  • Flush only human waste and toilet paper.
  • Go easy on the garbage disposal.

Limit water

  • Fix leaks. According to the EPA, one running toilet can add as much as 200 gallons a day.
  • Spread laundry across the week, and run full loads.
  • Send roof drains and sump pumps away from the field.

Protect the ground

  • Keep vehicles and heavy equipment off the field.
  • Don't build on it or pave over it.
  • Keep trees and shrubs away, and ask a professional about safe distances for your system.
  • Protect any repair area from digging and construction.

Look after the surface

  • Keep grass or other shallow-rooted cover over the field.
  • Mow it, but don't fertilize or water it, as the University of Minnesota advises.
  • Don't dig below 6 inches, a warning from University of Florida Extension.
  • Skip mulch, vegetable gardens and added soil.

What should you check?

WhenWhat to do
After heavy rainLook for soggy ground, and reduce water use until it dries
YearlyCheck for burrowing animals and damaged inspection pipes
At each pumpingHave the field looked at
Every 3 years or soonerHave the system inspected

Ground that stays saturated with no clear cause is a different matter. The University of Minnesota warns it can point to a long-term problem, so contact a licensed professional.

Do you need additives or cleaners?

No. The EPA says additives aren't needed for a system to work properly on household wastewater. The routine care that counts is pumping.

Quick answers

Can you plant grass over a leach field?

Yes. Penn State Extension calls turf grass the safest choice because its roots are shallow.

Can you walk on a leach field?

The University of Minnesota advises keeping all foot and vehicle traffic off the tank, pipes and field.

Rules vary by location

Your county may have its own inspection and maintenance rules. Check with your local health department.
